Hitting the reset button

Almost a year ago I left for Bologna full of anticipation for what my next adventures would be with so many new places ripe for exploring and interacting with other cultures. I wrote my introductory blog as usual to kick off my latest stay and then I went silent. Some may have wondered why there were no further updates while others may just have forgotten about my blog due to the inactivity.

Physical Limitations

I am not one to get into my personal issues here on my blog but I feel that I need to provide an explanation for my absence. Earlier last year I herniated a disc in my lower spine and after treatment and physical therapy my doctor assured me I was fine to travel. I was hesitant as I had pain in my legs that my therapist said would go away as I became more active. That did not turn out to be the case as the pain persisted which restricted me journeying beyond my neighborhood. I could not sit long to write my blog nor was I inspired to write anything as most of my time was spent in my apartment.

Upon my return it was determined that due to other issues I required back surgery. I am delighted to say that after several months of recuperating and physical therapy I am ready to resume my travels in mid-March. I am so looking forward to getting out each day and re-connecting with Bologna and friends. I often thought of writing my blog during this time but felt I needed to focus on my recovery.

Getting back in the saddle

I lost the apartment I had been renting due to my long absence which was a disappointment as it felt like coming home each time. But I found another in the same neighborhood which was important to me as I have made connections at the local cafe, market, and enoteca (wine shop)!

I know my language skills are rusty and I need to get back up to snuff even though I have spent time most days engaged in some  learning activity. But there is no substitute for personal conversations and daily interactions.

I will probably plan more trips local to Italy this spring as I build my stamina and entertain a dear friend. So once again stay tuned for more adventures as I sample what Italy and Europe have to offer. Don’t forget to follow me as Samplingitay on Facebook and Instagram as well.

  1. Hey, sounds like you’ll soon be “on the road again.” Keep me in the loop! I’m retired now, so I have more time to read things.
